The San Diego Zoo began with the roar of a lonely Lion, left behind after the 1915-1916 World's Fair.
Local Physician Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth rallied the community to build the Zoo in a deserted corner of the city's Balboa Park.
Today, The San Diego Zoo is among the world's finest Zoological Gardens,
with more than 3500 animals displayed in natural settings.
